a time to gather stones
Recently I just completed a study of Ecclesiastes with a group of young men and women in their twenties. Paul Sohn in his book Quarter Life Calling says that meaning and purpose are key questions for men and women as they conclude their first 25 years. The week we studied Ecclesiastes 3, I sent them on a picture scavenger hunt. I gave each group a section of verses and they went looking for pictures and texted them back to me. I put them in a video with the song Turn! Turn! Turn! by the Byrds in the background. They returned and we discussed chapter 3, watched the video and ate ice cream. The picture above is Caleb & Emily depicting Ecclesiastes 3:5 "a time to gather stones". Each chapter we studied what Solomon told us about living life "under the sun", i.e. without God in the picture and living life "under God". It really opened up Ecclesiastes for great discussion about meaning and purpose. Ecclesiastes 3 is a classic explanation of two worldviews, one a naturalistic materialism (vs 16-22) and the other a trust in a Sovereign God who superintends all of reality in time and eternity.
